An App that makes eSIM plans switching an easier task flyers would trust!

Intro
Mars eSIM is a global connectivity solution designed to make staying connected while travelling more flexible and convenient. Its unique physical SIM card brings eSIM functionality to devices without native eSIM support, allowing users to store multiple data profiles and switch between plans without physically changing SIM cards.
The Mars eSIM App serves as the central hub for managing these profiles and data plans. Users can easily activate, switch, and manage their connectivity across 200+ destinations, making it particularly useful for frequent travellers who regularly move between countries.
My goal was to design a more intuitive and efficient experience that makes managing international connectivity feel as effortless as switching destinations.
And of course, there’s light mode and dark mode for a better experience! 🌗

DESIGN CHALLENGE
How might we make global connectivity effortless?
With multiple eSIM profiles, destinations, data plans, and switching options to manage, the challenge was to simplify a potentially complex experience into one that feels intuitive and stress-free.
This becomes particularly challenging when users are travelling abroad and need connectivity immediately. A confusing interface or unclear plan status can create unnecessary stress at a time when users are already navigating an unfamiliar environment.
The app needed to help users understand their connectivity at a glance, switch plans with minimal effort, and access immediate support when issues arise abroad.
DESIGN AIMS
Making global connectivity as effortless as changing destinations.
Reduce Travel Friction Minimise unnecessary steps so users can manage their connectivity quickly, even when they are on the move.
Make Connectivity Easy to Understand Present essential information such as active plans, destinations, data usage, and validity in a clear and digestible way.
A support that travels along by designing an AI assistant which provides instant, conversational support wherever users are in the world, helping them stay connected and stress-free.
Key Points
ONBOARDING EXPERIENCE
A guided onboarding experience that highlights its key features and unique capabilities.
The onboarding introduces features that may be unfamiliar to users of traditional eSIM apps—such as the ability to share an eSIM data plan with friends directly through the app. This helps users recognise the app’s value from the beginning and encourages them to explore.
HOMEPAGE
We removed the hamburger menu, added a navigation bar and surfacing active eSIM plans directly on the homepage.
We prioritised the information and actions users need most. This reduces navigation steps and allows travellers to quickly understand their current connectivity and manage their plans with ease.
PLANS MANAGING
Introduced a dedicated Plans page that gives users a clearer and more organised space to browse, manage, and switch.
The previous design displayed all eSIM plans directly on the homepage, creating visual clutter and increased the effort required to find and manage a specific plan.
Therefore, plans now are organised into clear sections based on their status, allowing users to quickly understand which plan is currently active, review other available plans, and access relevant plan details.
Adding a New Plan
To make plan activation more intuitive, we introduced a clearly visible “Add a New Plan” CTA within the dedicated Plans page. This gives users an immediate understanding of where to add a new eSIM without having to search through the interface.
The flow below demonstrates how users can add a new eSIM plan by scanning their QR code. To make the newly added plan easy to identify, it is automatically placed at the top of the Plans list.
Switch/Activate/Stop/Delete a plan
We consolidated essential plan information and management actions into a single Plan Details page, enabling users to quickly understand their plan status and seamlessly activate, switch, pause, or delete a plan when needed.
The flow below demonstrates how users can switch a plan.
CHECK ORDERS
A segmented control is added to separate unused and downloaded eSIM plans.
To improve order management, a segmented control is added at the top to clearly separates unused and downloaded plans, allowing users to quickly identify the status of each plan and navigate their orders more efficiently.
SHARE A PLAN
Share a plan. Share the connection.
We introduced plan sharing to make eSIM management more collaborative and accessible. Mars eSIM members can share plans directly with one another, allowing experienced users to easily assist members who may be unfamiliar with eSIMs—turning a potentially complex setup process into a simple, shared experience.
Users also can add a member to their frequent lists which allow them to share with just a few taps!
The flow below demonstrates how users share a new plan to a member.
MARS AI ASSISTANT (MarsBot)
Support that meets travellers anywhere they are.
People buy a data plan before a trip, install it, and expect it to just work once they land. Most of the moments they need help are the inconvenient ones — mid-airport, low signal, unfamiliar settings menus. Typing out a support ticket and waiting for a reply doesn't fit that moment.
So a built-in assistant that a traveler can either talk to or type to, right inside the app, and get an answer immediately — with a graceful fallback to text whenever voice isn't practical.
Talk first, type if needed Voice is the default entry point since it's faster with one hand and a suitcase, but every voice screen has a visible, one-tap way to switch to text.
Make "thinking" visible An AI that goes quiet feels broken. A single animated orb communicates listening, thinking, and replying, so the system never feels unresponsive.
SOME OTHER STATES
Designing for every states through collaborative approach.
Beyond the primary user flows, the app involved a wide range of edge cases and UI states that needed to be carefully considered to ensure a complete and reliable experience.
We worked closely with engineers throughout the design process to identify and validate all possible scenarios, including different system states, user actions, errors, and exceptions. By reviewing these cases collaboratively, we ensured that every interaction had a clear response and that no screen or user scenario was left unaccounted for.
